Country strike the first blow

Country strike the first blow

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Country’s innings was impacted by rain as the players were regularly forced from the field, but it did not prevent Balldale’s Claire Wilson from top-scoring with 40 from 51 balls including three boundaries.

“Claire played some good shots and nearly batted the entire innings which was a positive sign,” High Performance Academy under-15 coach John Hayes said.

“The Country turned (over) the strike really well.”

Chasing 81, Melbourne’s Melina Ayres steadied the ship and decided attack was the best form of defence, hammering four boundaries en route to 21 from 36 balls.

However, some tight bowling from Mortlake’s Georgia Wareham, who captured 3-10 from her three overs, saw the Metro lose a flurry of wickets as they fell 23-runs short of the target.

“Georgia was able to get a bit of bounce,” Hayes said.

“She bowled really well.

“Overall, the girls did well in the very trying conditions and we saw some promising signs from all them.”

The under-15 Country v Metro series will resume today at 10am.
