Country Under 16s and 17s to clash this Sunday

The Allstars squad was selected following a ‘showcase’ fixture at Frankston Peninsula CC earlier this month.

The State side will be led by Brad Melville who represented Victoria Country in the U17 National Championships, averaging 21.57 with bat in hand as he top scored with 62 against Tasmania.

Melville also took four wickets during the tournament.

The U17s will be looking for opener Jordan Rossi to set a good platform for the team to build on, or ideally carry his bat.

In the U17 National Championships he scored 269 runs at an average of 33.63 and made his top score of the tournament – 82 – against Northern Territory.

Pace bowler Tom Officer will be looking to build on his performance in the U17 National Championships where he took seven wickets at an average of 28.29 and picked up his best figures of the tournament with 3-37 in a match against WA.

The Country Allstars side will be captained by Andrew Poppa from the Northern Rivers region.

Poppa played well in the Victorian Bushrangers U16 Dowling Shield, averaging 45 with the bat and hitting his high score of the competition against Mallee Murray as he retired not out on 42.

Right-arm pace bowler Max Cairns has had a successful season thus far, notably in the U16 Dowling Shield where he represented Country South East Country.

Cairns opened the bowling and claimed 10 wickets at just 8.50 in the four matches he was required to bowl in.

He picked up his tournament best figures of 5-48 against Metro Outer East and also secured a run out.

Offbreak bowler Jonah Serong is likely to play a large role in the attack and has been in good form of late.

Playing for Country Gippsland in the Dowling Shield he claimed six wickets at an average of 11.33, including best figures of 3-21 in their opening match against Metro Outer East.

The match will be a good test of skill and character for the U16s as they play against the U17s State squad.

The 16s will be looking to impress selectors as they vie for places in next season’s squad.
