Hartley鈥檚 six isn鈥檛 enough for the under-17s

After losing the toss and being sent in to field, Victoria let ACT/NSW Country off the hook after having them reeling at 3-9 at one stage.

Opening bowlers Cameron Brown and Jonah Koch were well on top for Victoria during the early overs, getting consistent edges through to Hartley behind the stumps.

However, led by captain Blake Macdonald (89), the batting side recovered to compile a strong total of 7-217 from its 50.

Brown, Koch and Blake Thomson all finished the innings with two wickets each, but the lack of consistent wickets throughout the middle overs hurt the Victorians’ chances of keeping the total contained.

The changes in momentum continued when Victoria came out to bat. Nicholas King and Zachary Elliott led the chase with a measured and mature opening stand of 46.

King was run out for 20 (46 balls faced), bringing skipper Will Pucovski to the crease to join Elliott.

Even though Elliott soon departed for 35 (61), Victoria continued to cruise.

Pucovski and Thomson put on 52 for the third wicket before the game swung again.

Thomson was trapped LBW for 29 (45) and Matthew Underwood was promptly run out for a duck, leaving the match in the balance with Victoria on 4-132.

With Pucovski still at the crease, Victoria still had the upper hand, but his eventual dismissal for 57 (89) was vital for ACT/NSW Country with the score evenly poised at 6/180.

The tail was exposed to the ACT/NSW Country attack, but keeper Hartley (19 off 23) and spinner Blake Parsons (16 off 16) gave the Victorians hope of a win.

With the exit of both Hartley and Parsons however, it was up to Xavier Crone and Jonah Koch to get the job done with five runs needed from the last over and one wicket in hand.

After they survived the first three balls, Crone was unfortunately run out with just three runs needed for victory. It was the fourth run out of the innings.

The tough loss leaves Victoria on the back foot in the tournament, especially after points were split in the rain-abandoned match on Monday.

They will be determined to get full points in their first two-day game against Queensland at The University of Hobart starting on Thursday.
