McKenna oozes class

The Central Highlands star finished 135 not out from 138 balls including 19 boundaries and two sixes as he propelled Country to 6-336 from their 80 overs.

Highlands teammate James Lidgett provided superb support with 80 at the top of the order, while South East Country keeper Rob Salerni added a rapid-fire 40 at the death.

The day belong to McKenna, however, as he converted his impressive early week form into a big ton.

Having worked alongside Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers coach Greg Shipperd over winter, the young gun put on 119 with Lidgett before upping the tempo as the innings neared completion.

“Pat’s really skilful and a high-level young performer with great technique and a great work ethic … he comes highly recommended,” Shipperd, whose batting protégés include Test great Ricky Ponting, told the Ballarat Courier recently.

“Pat’s been identified as an emerging and promising batsman and leader and while I haven’t seen that side of him yet (leadership), he is playing well and working on his batting.”

Outer East’s Sean Griffin was the sole multiple wicket taker with 2-57 from 12 overs.

In the under-17 fixture, Victoria Metro dismissed Country for 195 in the 74th over during a disciplined bowling performance.

Gippsland’s Kade Burns top-scored with 60 from 101 balls, while South East Country’s Jackson Mockett finished unbeaten on 24.

Metro will commence its run-chase this afternoon before each fixture concludes tomorrow.
