Metro claim thumping victory

Having split the white-ball encounters, Metro overhauled the target with nine wickets in hand as an unbeaten century from Inner South East’s Jacob Serry paved the way for a memorable win.

Serry was retired on 101 after blazing 12 boundaries and a six at the top of the order, but his departure failed to slow the run rate, as Shehan Kudage-Don (57*), Sam Harper (44*), Tim Sugumar (42*) and Dan Syson (34*) all followed suit.

Having retired five batsmen in total, Metro finished on 3-364 when stumps were called.

In the under-19 series, Metro claimed a clean sweep as South East Bayside’s Liam Tonkin engineered a brilliant chase.

With Jake Wood dismissing Jayden Borg without scoring, Tonkin strode to the crease in the opening over before peeling off 21 boundaries and two sixes during his marathon stay in the middle.

Tonkin eventually departed for 131 from 120 balls, enjoying stands of 101 and 97 with Jack Rudd (29) and Jack Taylor (35) respectively.

Outer East’s Jack Blain (63*) and Sean Griffin (36*) then guided Metro home as they combined for an unbeaten 79-run sixth-wicket partnership to overhaul Country’s herculean 6-336 with 26 balls in hand.

The Country v Metro series is used as a key selection tool for the up-coming National Championships, with additional trial matches to be held in Melbourne over the next two months.
