Scorpions become giant-slayers

The Scorpions became the only second-ranked team to advance into the final four as they secured a six-wicket victory against a previously unbeaten Western Spirit outfit.

Bowling first, the Scorpions dismissed the Waves for just 71 as quicks Hamish McIntyre (4-11) and William Sutherland (3-11) tore through their opponents.

Sutherland finished unbeaten on 23 as the Scorpions chased down the total in 18 overs to set up a semi-final showdown with the Inner East Emus.

Having topped Pool B, the Emus produced another disciplined bowling performance as they routed the Pioneers for 63.

Left-arm spinner James Boyce claimed 4-14 before compiling 33 at the top of the order to spearhead a seven-wicket win.

In the opposite semi-final, South East Bayside Breakers will clash with the Northern Rivers after they both maintained their unbeaten records at the carnival.

A balanced bowling display from Breakers was the undoing of the Western Waves as they were skittled for 71.

Shubham Bhargave took 3-12 with the new ball before his teammates chased the total down with relative ease in the 23rd over.

Nathan Murphy top-scored with 31, while Bhargave contributed 17.

The Rivers faced a tougher time of things, however, as they defeated the North West Wizards in a tight encounter at Greenvale Reserve.

The Rivers top-order fired as Daniel Clohesy (40), Todd Murphy (38) and James Ryan (30) guided them to 6-143.

Wizards skipper Fergus O’Neill (41*) and Patrick Willach (35) did their best to chase down the target, but ultimately, the Wizards fell short by 11 runs.

In other results, Central Highlands enjoyed a well deserved victory over Mallee Murray Bulls.

The Bulls only required 18 runs for victory with four wickets in hand before two run outs triggered a late order collapse as they fell six runs short of the Highlands’ total of 137.

Darby Semmens was the pick of the Highlands bowlers taking 3-19, including the key wicket of Bulls skipper Josh Wooding, who made 39 in the losing cause.

Earlier in the day, Dylan Landt continued his good carnival with the bat, making 37 as he combined with Bailey Henderson, who made 36.

Jack Le Brun’s fine form with the ball has continued, bagging a five-wicket haul and leading the Outer East Eagles to a commanding victory over the Gippsland Pride.

Chasing 115, the game was precariously poised at 4-45, before Josh Hartill (30*) and Ryan Peter Budge (45*) combined for a 70-run partnership to see the Eagles home.

Barwon Rockets have taken out a close match against the South East Sharks, defeating them by eight runs.

The Rockets scrambled to 9-136 thanks to some late hitting from Oscar Brownless (18*), before the Sharks were cruising at 2-101.

However, late wickets would be the undoing of the Sharks as Brownless (2-14) took two wickets to close the game out for the Rockets second victory.
