Thomson plunders Metro

Fresh off a seven-wicket loss during yesterday’s opening Twenty20, Country responded in the best possible fashion as they controlled proceedings against Metro.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Country posted 8-220 from their 50 overs with Thomson stroking five boundaries en route to 62, with Malle Murray’s Braidyn Turner (36), Western Waves’ Tim Goodman (31*) and South East Country’s Adam McMaster (22) providing solid support.

Inner South East spinner Sam Grinwade was again impressive with 3-23 from his 10 overs.

“Thomson batted beautifully,” Cricket Victoria High Performance Manager Tim McCaskill said.

“Turner was good as well, but it was a much better performance from Country again today.”

In reply, Metro skipper Sam Harper picked up where he left off yesterday as he raced to 34 from 28 balls, but his departure sparked a collapse of 5-49.

While Dan Syson (31) and Wes Agar (22) provided some handy lower order runs, Country wrapped up proceedings to square the series.

In the under-19 encounter, a stunning bowling performance propelled Victoria Metro to a 115-run victory.

Defending just 192, Metro routed Country for 77 as Northern Falcons quick Matt Bullen (4-11) ripped through the top order before pathway teammate Nish Perera (3-8) cleaned up the tail.

During a stunning opening spell, Bullen reduced Country to 5-21 as he removed four of the top-five bats.

Country skipper Pat McKenna top-scored with 25, while keeper Robbie Salerni rounded out a good day with the gloves with a gritty 17.

Earlier in the day, North West opener Jayden Borg struck a polished half-century as he propelled Metro to 192.

South East Bayside’s Liam Tonkin (33), Northern Falcons’ Jack Rudd (30) and Outer East’s Jack Blain (27) all provided handy contributions, while South East Country’s Jake Wood (3-23) was the pick of the bowlers.

The Country v Barooga series will continue tomorrow with each age group commencing an 80-over fixture.
