Under-15 Country v Metro series

With the National Championships looming, the series will be used as a key selection tool for the Victorian squad.

Having spent the past three months in the developmental stage, the girls will transition into game mode, playing two Twenty20s and a one-day game over the next three days.

“In phase one of the Academy program we wanted to have a strong focus on skill development and now in phase two our focus moves to education about nutrition, fitness and game sense,” High Performance Academy under-15 coach (female) John Hayes said.

“The girls have worked really hard over the past couple of months and now have an opportunity to show their skills and what they have learnt.

“We are really looking to focus on our tactics and game sense because we need to make better decisions more often.”

Hayes hopes that pace will be the key to taking his team one step further from last year’s runners-up performance at the Championships.

“Being runners-up last year, we now want to go one better,” Hayes said.

“We have a number of girls who bowl between the high-80s to mid-90s (kilometers), so we definitely have a pace element in our squad.

“They are all developing nicely and continuing to get faster.”

During the Country v Metro series, Hayes will also be looking for returning players to showcase their leadership skills.

“We’ve got five girls carrying over from last year’s squad, including Georgia Wareham, Annabel Martin, Amy Yates, Hayleigh Brennan and Madeline Wright,” Hayes said.

“We are looking for them to lead from the front and share their experiences from last year.”

Four invitational players have also been included in the series to provide further development of their skills.

The trial matches begin tomorrow at 10am at Caufield Grammar in Wheelers Hill.
