Renegades unveil Test quicks

In a major coup for the Etihad-based outfit, the Renegades also announced new two-year deals for Australia A players Alex Doolan and Fawad Ahmed, as well as the re-signing of leading Test wicket-taker Muthiah Muralidaran for a further season.

Siddle and Pattinson are both expected to play for the Renegades following the conclusion of the fifth Ashes Test at the SCG this summer, but could be available for selection earlier depending on their national commitments.

Pattinson, who was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back overnight, said he was looking forward to joining last year’s minor premiers.

“I think we’ve got a fantastic team on the field and … this year with a few more people coming in, expect some fiery, fast spells,” Pattinson said.

Siddle, who sat out BBL|02 after signing with the Melbourne Stars in BBL|01, said he was focused on building his credentials and gaining more match experience in the T20 arena.

“I want to get back into playing short-form cricket,” the Australian spearhead said.

“To have that opportunity again in four over bursts, having a crack and getting the pace up there … I think it’ll be a lot of fun.

Meanwhile, Ahmed, who claimed career-best figures of 8-77 for Australia A last week, has re-committed to the Renegades on a two-year deal that will see him pairing with Muralidaran at Etihad Stadium for BBL|03.

Ahmed and Muralidaran join Aaron O’Brien in an impressive spin-bowling attack.

The Renegades have also assembled a top-class pace bowling unit led by Pattinson, Siddle, Nathan Rimmington, Jayde Herrick and Will Sheridan.

“I’m really pleased and happy to sign with the Renegades for BBL|03 and I’m looking forward to the season,” Ahmed said.

“I worked really hard with the Renegades last season. It was a good six or seven weeks and they really helped me through BBL|02.

“I (then) got an opportunity with the Bushrangers and it really clicked. For me, I was nervous at one stage but it was a good summer.”

The Renegades have now signed 15 of 18 players for BBL|03, with the final three places (including the possibility of another international) to be filled by Friday, December 6.

Melbourne Renegades squad: Aaron Finch (c), Peter Nevill, James Pattinson*, Tom Cooper, Peter Siddle*, Daniel Harris, Muthiah Muralidaran, Nathan Rimmington, Ben Rohrer, Michael Hill, Will Sheridan, Jayde Herrick, Aaron O’Brien, Alex Doolan and Fawad Ahmed.
