Venables rewrites the record books

Chasing the Western Waves’ 7-88 in the second round of the Under-14 Victorian Bushrangers Pathway Championships, Venables smashed his way to an unbeaten 102.

The century nearly doubled the Spirit’s previous highest score of 55, and is the first ever T20 hundred in the under-14 competition.

For the Spirit, yesterday’s comfortable win has put them at the top of Group A, ahead of today’s highly anticipated encounter against fellow unbeaten team, Mallee Murray Bulls.

In other under-14 results, Northern Rivers easily accounted for Inner South East Scorpions on the back of a terrific 58 not out from Cade Mueller.

Opening the batting, the Kyabram keeper-batsman batted through the innings to see the Rivers post 6-119 from their 20 overs.

In reply, the Scorpions struggled with the run-a-ball run rate from the outset, ultimately falling 33 runs short.

North East Knights remain the only undefeated team in Group C after comfortably defeating Outer East Eagles at Jubilee Park.

Bradley Melville registered the second highest score of the day, with an impressive 77*helping the Knights chase the Eagles’ 4-86.

In what was no doubt the bowling performance of the day, Gippsland’s Wilson McGillivray devastated the Southern Pioneers’ vatting line-up, taking 4-12 from just 15 balls to help rout his opponents for 97.

Earlier, Gippsland mustered 5-137 courtesy of a well-made 47 to Atley Williams.

In the under-16’s, Dan Syson continued his good form, amassing 56 in the North West Wizards victory over the Mallee Murray Bulls.

Batting first, the Bulls made 5-95 from their 20, with Syson and Declan Kennedy (16) putting on 89 for the Wizards’ opening wicket before the former fell just six runs from the target.

The Wizards middle order had no trouble with the target, finishing 4-135 from their 20 overs.

A Ryan Quirk half-century was not enough to stop the Southern Pioneers going down against an excellent all-round Gippsland outfit.

The Pioneers batted first, scoring quickly to register 5-136 from their 20 overs, with Quirk finishing unbeaten with an impressive 64.

Gippsland never looked flustered in reply, surviving a mid-order collapse, to chase down the target with an over to spare.

Fixtures today will determine which sides compete in the ‘live’ quarter-finals tomorrow, with most sides still in contention for a berth.
